OCD Treatment
What is OCD?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by a cycle of obsessions and compulsions that can significantly disrupt a person’s daily life, relationships, and well-being.
- Obsessions are unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that cause intense anxiety or distress. These thoughts are often persistent and feel uncontrollable. Common obsessions may include fears of contamination, harm coming to oneself or others, or a need for things to be “just right.”
- Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental rituals that a person feels driven to perform in response to the obsessions. These actions are intended to reduce the anxiety caused by the obsessions but often provide only temporary relief. Examples include excessive hand-washing, checking locks or appliances repeatedly, counting, or mentally repeating phrases.
Many people with OCD recognize that their thoughts or behaviors are irrational or excessive, but the urge to perform compulsions can feel overpowering. Left untreated, OCD can interfere with work, school, relationships, and overall quality of life.
Who Might Experience It?
