ADHD Evaluation & Treatment
What is ADHD?
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults. It is characterized by patterns of inattention, impulsivity, and/or hyperactivity that interfere with daily life, academic or work performance, and relationships.
There are three main types of ADHD:
- Predominantly Inattentive Type – marked by difficulty focusing, following instructions, staying organized, or completing tasks. Individuals may seem forgetful or easily distracted.
- Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type – includes excessive fidgeting, talking, restlessness, and impulsive actions such as interrupting or acting without considering consequences.
- Combined Type – a mix of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.
ADHD is not caused by laziness or a lack of discipline—it’s rooted in how the brain develops and functions, often involving differences in executive functioning, emotional regulation, and dopamine levels. While commonly diagnosed in childhood, many people carry symptoms into adolescence and adulthood, where it can affect careers, relationships, and self-esteem if left untreated.
Who Might Experience It?
Children with ADHD may struggle in school; adults may have difficulty focusing, managing time, or staying organized.
