Therapeutic Tips: How you can support your solider as a spouse

  1. Create Stability & Routine: Consistent routines can help provide a sense of safety and predictability for partners experiencing PTSD, especially during stressful periods or transitions.
  2. Communicate with Patience & Understanding: Trauma can affect communication and emotional expression. Listen without judgment, avoid pressure, and encourage open conversations at a comfortable pace.
  3. Learn PTSD Triggers & Warning Signs: Loud noises, crowds, certain memories, or stressful situations may trigger emotional or physical reactions. Understanding triggers can help you respond with compassion instead of frustration.
  4. Respect Their Need for Space: Some individuals may need quiet time or moments alone when feeling overwhelmed. Giving space while remaining supportive can help them feel safe and understood.
  5. Encourage Professional Support: Therapy, counseling, peer support groups, and mental health services can play an important role in healing. Remind your partner that seeking help is a sign of strength.
  6. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection: Healing is not always linear. Small steps forward matter, and patience, encouragement, and compassion can make a lasting difference.

Most importantly, remind your partner they are not alone. Support, understanding, and connection can help create a path toward healing together.
